Parabens are chemical substances, used in skincare products, to prolong shelf life in many skincare products by preventing the growth of mold and bacteria within them. A British study found paraben traces in the breast tissues of cancer patients, however, no research has been done that proves it to be a “carcinogenic chemical”. These parabens are not only harmful to humans, but also for the environment. Many marine animals are said to have these paraben traces, as our products are washed into the sewage system and released into the environment.

Check the ingredient list before buying a product and make sure they are paraben-free. You can switch to products made from natural ingredients. Though they are a bit expensive but are great for your skin and overall health.
We have also compiled a list of a few other chemical ingredients which are harmful to us.

1. Parabens ( Propyl, Isopropyl, Butyl, Isobutyl )
These are included in the products for preservative purposes. They cause disruptions in hormones, especially overproduction of Oestrogen, leading to increased growth of cells in the breasts which can lead to tumors.
2. Diethanolamine
Some products you use produce lather like soaps. This is due to the usage of this chemical and it also helps in pH adjustment. It may cause skin irritation and toxication of skin organs.
3. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate
Just like food items with sulfates are extremely harmful, skincare products are no exception. They act as a cleanser and emulsifier but may cause skin irritation.
4. Butylated Hydroxyanisole (BHA)
Some of the cosmetics like Lip shades and Eye shadows contain this chemical. This acts as an antioxidant, preservative, and indicates fragrance. But it also causes disruption in hormones and skin irritation.
5. Contaminants
Skincare products contain some of the most toxic metals like Lead, Nickel, Cobalt, and Aluminium.
These chemicals are toxic to human life when used continuously. They are found to cause hormonal disruptions in women and infertility in men. They also cause acne, hyper pigmentation and contact dermatitis. So, make sure you check the ingredient list before buying a product.
